During the voyage of HMS DISCOVERY
to the West coast of North America in November of 1792,
a seaman, Jonathan Davison fell overboard.
It was unusual in those days for a warship
to carry a boat in davits at the stern,
but Captain Vancouver with foresight
had his ship fitted out that way and quick launching
of the jolly boat enabled a successful rescue.
