Howe Sound June 15th 1792

Captain George Vancouver explored and and charted much of the coast line of what is now called British Columbia, Canada. He is depicted here accompanied by Lieutenant Peter Puget in Howe Sound which Vancouver named after a famous Admiral, RN. His ships were left at a safe anchorage and the surveying was done from Discovery's Yawl (also called the pinnace) and Launch.

The port city of Vancouver is named after Captain George Vancouver and so is Vancouver Island; both of which are close to the location depicted in this painting. Lieutenant Peter Puget in remembered for giving his name to Puget Sound in the State of Washington, USA.
